Men’s Mental Health: Breaking the Silence and Taking Control

Men’s Mental Health: Breaking the Silence and Taking Control

The Silent Crisis in Men’s Mental Health

By Charles Miller, CRNA, CMO, Founder/Owner of Scenic City Neurotherapy

At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we see firsthand how societal expectations create barriers to mental healthcare for men. Roughly 20% of men experience anxiety or depression, but less than half seek treatment. This gap can, and does, cost lives.

Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a wake-up call. At our Chattanooga clinic, we offer real solutions for men who were taught to keep it all in and push through the pain.

Why Men’s Mental Health Matters: The Stark Reality

By the Numbers:
  • Men die by suicide 3.85 times more than women. (AFSP)
  • Men die of overdose at 2-3 times greater a rate than women. (NIH)
The Hidden Symptoms Men Experience:

Unlike textbook depression symptoms, men often present with:

  • Unexplained physical pain (headaches, digestive issues)
  • Increased risk-taking behaviors
  • Workaholism
  • Social withdrawal
  • Irritability masking more profound emotional distress

Breaking Down Barriers to Care

1. The Masculinity Trap

Many men were raised with harmful messages:
✓ “Real men don’t cry”
✓ “Pain is weakness leaving the body”
✓ “Handle your own problems”

Getting support isn’t weakness – it’s strategy. At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we help men approach mental health like they would fitness or finance: with a game plan.

2. The Fear of Professional Consequences

Concerns we commonly hear:

  • “Will my boss find out?”
  • “Will it affect my security clearance?”
  • “I can’t afford to look weak at work.”
  • “Will it show up on a drug test?”
  • “What if asking for help changes how people see me?”

At Scenic City Neurotherapy, your mental health is confidential, respected, and treated like the asset it is.

Our Innovative Approach at Scenic City Neurotherapy

Success Stories From Our Chattanooga Clinic

“If I could boil this down to one overriding thought of what the ketamine has done, it is this: I learned how to change my mind. All of the other things that I’ve been doing – meditation, yoga, better diet, controlling drinking, exercise – all of it suddenly started to work, and I was getting results. I can say now that 2022 is the best year of my life so far. I finally have a lasting sense of well-being and peace.” – Rick (Veteran)

“I didn’t realize how much noise was in my mind… Now, for the first time, it’s quiet. I have clarity of thought and the ability to handle stress calmly.” – Eric (Husband)

“I’m happier overall. I feel better about how I handle situations. The optimism is there, and I’m living more in the present, rather than worrying about the future. I experience life differently now.” – John (Father)

IV Ketamine vs. Esketamine (Spravato): A Comprehensive Guide to Effective Depression Treatment at Scenic City Neurotherapy

IV Ketamine vs. Esketamine (Spravato): A Comprehensive Guide to Effective Depression Treatment at Scenic City Neurotherapy

By Charles Miller, CRNA, CMO, Founder/Owner of Scenic City Neurotherapy

For individuals facing treatment-resistant depression (TRD), PTSD, anxiety, OCD, or chronic pain, traditional medications don’t always deliver the relief they need. Ketamine therapy has long been recognized for its rapid and transformative results, making it a powerful first-line option for those seeking effective, lasting change.

With a proven track record and years of clinical use, ketamine stands out as a trusted approach. That said, not all ketamine therapies are created equal, and each comes with a ceiling on its potential success. Understanding those limits helps you choose the option with the highest likelihood of lasting results.

At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we specialize in IV Ketamine Infusion Therapy, utilizing our Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®) protocol.

This definitive guide examines the critical differences between:

✔ IV Racemic Ketamine (our specialty)
✔ Intranasal Esketamine (Spravato nasal spray)

We’ll explore science-driven outcomes, treatment protocols, and why our patients consistently achieve better results with MSKIT® than with Spravato.

Understanding Ketamine: How It Works Differently Than Antidepressants

Traditional SSRIs and SNRIs work slowly (over weeks or months) by altering neurotransmitter levels. Ketamine acts within hours by:

  • Stimulating a neuro-regenerative protein, BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), to repair damaged neural pathways
  • Enhancing neuroplasticity, effectively rewiring neural pathways

However, the type of ketamine and delivery method drastically impact effectiveness.

Racemic Ketamine vs. Intranasal Esketamine (Spravato): Key Differences

Feature IV Ketamine (Racemic Ketamine) Intranasal Esketamine (Spravato)
Composition Contains both R- and S-ketamine Only S-ketamine
Bioavailability 100% (direct bloodstream delivery) 8-40% (depends on anatomy and allergies)
Dosing Fully customizable to the individual Only two fixed doses (56mg or 84mg)
Administration Controlled IV infusion (adjustable/pausable) Single nasal spray (no adjustments)
Neuroplasticity Optimal release of BDNF (necessary for neuro-regenerative effects) Limited, if any, neuro-regenerative effects

Why Scenic City Neurotherapy’s MSKIT® Protocol Outperforms Standard Treatments

The MSKIT® Difference

Unlike other ketamine therapy protocols, our Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®) focuses on:

  • Education
  • Comfort
  • Safety
  • Proven Results

Proven Results: Our Clinical Data

Our 2022-2024 study analyzed 252 patients receiving MSKIT® for depression:

  • 82% response rate (Patients reported more than 50% relief of depressive symptoms)
  • 15% Partial Response rate (Patients reported between 20-50% relief of depressive symptoms)
  • 3% No meaningful response (Patents reported less than 20% relief of depressive symptoms)

Compared to Spravato, MSKIT® outcomes are stronger; Spravato’s response rates have not been shown to differ significantly from those of antidepressants or intranasal placebo in clinical studies (Janssen Research & Development, LLC).

Ketamine Therapy Process at Scenic City Neurotherapy

  1. No-Cost Consultation (60 minutes)
  2. Initial Stabilization Phase (6 infusions over 3 weeks)
  3. Maintenance Phase (patient-driven follow-up boosters)
  4. Post-Stabilization Success Plan (therapy, lifestyle, environment, etc.)

Unlike Spravato, which requires twice-weekly clinic visits, our model is patient-driven and backed by long-term results.

Spravato (Esketamine): Pros, Cons, and Hidden Costs

Potential Benefits

✔ FDA-approved (may be covered by some insurance plans)

Significant Drawbacks

  • Lacks neuroregenerative benefits critical for success
  • Low & inconsistent absorption (8-40% bioavailability)
  • Fixed dosing (no adjustments for individual needs)
  • Long-term in-office visits (2x/week, then decrease to 1x/week, followed by bi-weekly or weekly sessions, and potentially continue indefinitely)

While insurance coverage may seem appealing, many patients find:

  • IV ketamine provides faster, more reliable relief

Direct Comparison: Why IV Ketamine Is Superior

Factor IV Ketamine at Scenic City Spravato
Dosing ✔ Fully customized ✖ Fixed dosing
Absorption ✔ 100% bioavailability ✖ 8-40% absorption
Control ✔ Adjustable throughout treatment ✖ No adjustments once given
Response Rates ✔ 82% (MSKIT® data) ✖ ~50-60%
Convenience ✔ 2x/week for 3 weeks then as needed, flexible maintenance ✖ 2x/week, then decrease to 1x/week, followed by bi-weekly or weekly sessions, and potentially continue indefinitely

Why Choose Scenic City Neurotherapy?

In all published research on ketamine, across every method of administration, Scenic City Neurotherapy’s Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®) consistently yields the highest patient-reported relief from depressive symptoms.

Navigating Mental Health Care: When to Consider Neurotherapy

Navigating Mental Health Care: When to Consider Neurotherapy

By Charles Miller, CRNA, CMO, Founder/Owner of Scenic City Neurotherapy

You don’t need another reminder to journal, meditate, or “stay positive.” You’ve heard it all. Maybe you’ve tried. Maybe you’re just tired of being disappointed. What if it’s not that you haven’t done enough, but that no one’s told you what your brain actually needs?

Mental health care has shifted over the years. There are more options now, for everything from anxiety and depression to brain fog and post-traumatic stress. But more options don’t always mean better outcomes. Medication, therapy, coaching, they help some. But not everyone.

If you’re done settling and ready to take your care into your own hands, Neurotherapy offers a different way forward. Not a quick fix. Just something that finally makes sense.

At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we specialize in advanced, brain-focused therapies that optimize brain function and improve mental well-being. In this blog, we’ll explore:

  • The limitations of traditional mental health care
  • What Neurotherapy is and how it works
  • Key signs that Neurotherapy is right for you
  • The benefits of Neurotherapy for various mental health related purposes

The Limitations of Traditional Mental Health Treatments

Traditional mental health treatments typically include:

  • Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy): Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other modalities that help individuals process emotions, learn positive coping strategies, and develop healthy daily habits.
  • Medication: Antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and stimulants can help manage symptoms but often come with side effects such as emotional blunting, weight gain, sleep disturbances, and more.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Exercise, diet, and mindfulness support overall mental wellness.

While these approaches work well for some, they aren’t always sufficient. Some common challenges include:

  • Medication Resistance: Some individuals don’t respond well to psychiatric medications or experience unwanted side effects.
  • Medication Trade-Off: The side effects of medication can start to take over, draining your energy, clouding your focus, dulling your connection to others. You went on them to feel better, but now it feels like you’ve traded one set of problems for another. The goal isn’t just to get through the day.
  • Symptom Persistence: Symptoms can linger, even with therapy and/or lifestyle changes. Traditional approaches focus on coping strategies and healthy habits, but they rarely address the real issue: how your brain is communicating. And no, this isn’t about a “chemical imbalance.” It’s about how your neurons are wired to fire.

If you’ve tried these methods without the success you are seeking, Neurotherapy offers a scientifically backed alternative.

What Is Neurotherapy?

Neurotherapy offers a more effective way to optimize brain function and improve mental well-being. At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we focus on two advanced approaches: Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). These therapies work to promote neuroplasticity, helping your brain rewire itself for better cognitive function, emotional regulation, trauma resolution, and overall mental health.

How Do MSKIT® and TMS Work?

Think of Neurotherapy as a way to wash away the neuronal connections damaged by stress, trauma, anxiety, pain, depression, and more, starting with a clean slate.

  1. Catalyst: TMS and MSKIT® act as a catalyst, stimulating your brain in a way that encourages it to release a neuroregenerative protein. Normally, this protein is released naturally during sleep, but with the help of these therapies, the brain is flooded with an increased amount, boosting its regenerative response.
  2. Neurogenesis: In the days and weeks following treatment, your brain undergoes neuroplasticity, a process that allows it to rewire itself. This is the time to build new healthy habits, learn fresh skills, and strengthen your mental resilience. You might even revisit old habits or skills that once didn’t work. They could have a much better impact now that your brain is firing optimally.
  3. Long-term: The benefits of treatment continue over time, but maintaining progress requires consistent effort. Life will still have its ups and downs, but with a better functioning brain, you’ll recover faster, handle challenges better, and adapt more effectively, creating lasting change.

Neurotherapy isn’t about treating symptoms like depression or anxiety. It’s about creating lasting changes in neural pathways for sustainable improvements in your quality of life.

When Should You Consider Neurotherapy?

Neurotherapy hasn’t always been the first-line treatment, but scientific advancements have shown it should be. Here are key signs it might be the right choice for you:

1. You Feel “Off” Without a Clear Reason

You’re covering all the bases: exercise, nutrition, hydration, relationships, environment. Everything seems aligned, yet something still feels off. Neurotherapy targets the brain’s underlying functions, helping you feel the positive impact of all your efforts. It’s about enhancing your brain’s ability to process and respond, so you can truly experience the benefits of your healthy choices.

2. Traditional Treatments Haven’t Worked

If therapy and medication haven’t provided sufficient relief, Neurotherapy addresses the underlying neuronal communication issue manifesting as symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, OCD, and more.

3. Medication Side Effects Are Problematic

Many psychiatric medications come with side effects like fatigue, weight gain, or emotional numbness. Neurotherapy offers a powerful alternative with minimal to no side effects. With MSKIT, you may experience brief nausea (easily managed), and with TMS, mild headache or slight scalp irritation, both of which are typically temporary and manageable.

4. You Have Treatment-Resistant Conditions

Conditions like treatment-resistant depression often respond well to Neurotherapy by targeting the root cause of the symptoms.

5. You Want a Comprehensive Approach

For those seeking a more comprehensive approach to mental health, Neurotherapy is a safe, evidence-based option that complements therapies like CBT, DBT, and EMDR. Our treatments do not require you to stop any medications. In fact, during Stabilization, we make no changes to medications or lifestyle so we can clearly assess the effects of Neurotherapy alone. As you improve, any medication adjustments are made gradually and safely in collaboration with your prescriber, only if that’s something you choose.

6. You Experience Brain Fog or Cognitive Decline

Neurotherapy isn’t just for depressive symptoms. It can also enhance focus, memory, and cognitive performance, making it useful for brain fog, long-COVID, TBI (traumatic brain injury) recovery, and age-related decline.

You don’t have to wait until you’re “broken” to seek brain care. It’s not just about fixing something that’s gone wrong—it’s a preventative step for maintaining mental health. Life takes its toll on all of us. We experience stress, trauma, and challenges that impact our brains, often in ways we don’t realize. So, when people ask, “Should we all consider this at some point?” the answer is yes. None of us make it through life unscathed.

Conditions That Benefit from Neurotherapy

Research supports Neurotherapy’s effectiveness for the following:

  • Anxiety & Depression – Reawakens underactive brain regions and forms new neural pathways to feel and experience emotions correctly.
  • Cognitive Issues – Improves processing speed, mental clarity, and sustained focus.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress – Balances activity in the amygdala, reducing flashbacks and emotional reactivity.
  • Complex Post-Traumatic Stress – Supports the brain’s ability to break survival-based patterns and create space for lasting change.
  • Insomnia & Sleep Disorders – Regulates brain rhythms to support deeper, more restorative sleep.
  • Chronic Stress & Burnout –  Restores pathways damaged by stress to support balance and resilience.
  • Migraines & Chronic Pain – Addresses neurological contributors to pain perception.

The Science Behind Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy: Life After Treatment

The Science Behind Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy: Life After Treatment

What Happens After TMS? Understanding the Long-Term Impact

By Charles Miller, CRNA, CMO, Founder of Scenic City Neurotherapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is a life-changing treatment for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, and OCD. While many people focus on what happens before and during treatment, understanding what to expect after completing TMS therapy is equally important.

At Scenic City Neurotherapy (SCN), we believe that the post-TMS phase is crucial for sustaining progress and maintaining mental well-being. In this guide, we’ll explore the long-term effects of TMS, how to maximize its benefits, potential follow-up care, and answers to common questions about life after TMS. Prefer a video format? Watch here: Post-Treatment Guidance for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Post-TMS Expectations: What You Might Notice After Treatment

TMS therapy doesn’t have an abrupt ending, as your brain continues to adjust and strengthen neural connections even after your sessions conclude. Here’s what you might experience:

1. Gradual or Immediate Improvement

Some patients experience mood improvements within weeks of starting TMS, while others see gradual changes over months. Tracking your progress and staying patient is key.

After your treatment, you’ll participate in a follow-up phone call with our Care Team to check in on your progress.

Reflect on how you’re feeling:

  • Daily Mood: Is your mood where you want it to be?
  • Energy Levels: Are you noticing improvements in your energy or mental stamina?
  • World Perception: How do you feel about your interactions and environment?
  • Coping and Growth: Are you developing healthy coping mechanisms and finding ways to grow personally? During this time, it’s important to stay engaged with your counselor, as they will be a key part of your ongoing support.

To help us understand how things are going, we recommend you continue completing the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 assessments daily. These tools are helpful in tracking your progress and making any necessary adjustments to your care.

2. Increased Energy and Emotional Balance

Many patients report feeling lighter, more energized, and emotionally balanced. Everyday tasks that once seemed overwhelming may feel easier, and your overall outlook on life may become more positive.

3. Long-Lasting Mood Stability

TMS strengthens the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for emotional regulation. This means that even after treatment, your brain will more effectively integrate the tools learned in counseling, helping you manage stress and maintain emotional stability.

4. Potential Need for Maintenance Sessions

For some individuals, booster sessions may be needed if symptoms gradually return. As you move forward, we will work together to design a maintenance plan that fits your schedule and individual needs. If you notice dips in your mood and think you might need additional treatment, consider the following:

  • Assess Your Daily Well-Being: Pay attention to how you’re feeling day-to-day, including your energy levels and overall mood.
  • Evaluate Engagement: Reflect on your interactions with the world and how well you’re managing daily activities.
  • Notice Unexplained Declines: If you experience a significant decline in your mood over a week without any obvious causes, such as major life events, reach out to us for support.

Know that booster sessions are not a failure; they’re a safety net to keep your plasticity optimal while you make medication changes, optimize your environment, and address the logistics of your life.

What If I Don’t Feel Better After TMS?

While TMS is highly effective, not everyone responds the same way. If you haven’t experienced the level of improvement you expected, don’t lose hope! There are alternative strategies and adjustments that can be made, such as:

  • Did you experience a particularly challenging day?
  • Do you need a booster treatment?
  • How do you feel about your interactions and environment?
  • Are your medications due for an adjustment?
  • Are you developing healthy coping mechanisms and fostering personal growth?
  • Are you staying engaged with your counselor?
  • Should you consider adjunct therapies like Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®)?

The key is to communicate openly with your Care Team about your progress. At SCN, we are committed to helping you find the right path to long-term relief.

How to Maximize the Benefits of TMS Therapy

TMS therapy is only one part of a comprehensive mental health plan. Here are some strategies to enhance and prolong its benefits:

1. Continue Therapy and Counseling

TMS helps reset the brain’s neural pathways, but therapy can reinforce these changes by teaching new coping mechanisms. Consider continuing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, or group counseling to support your mental health journey.

2. Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management

A healthy sleep routine and stress management techniques can significantly impact your mental well-being. Practices such as:

  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Consistent sleep schedules can help reinforce the neurological improvements from TMS.

3. Maintain a Healthy Diet and Exercise Routine

Proper nutrition and physical activity are essential for brain health. A balanced diet rich in omega-3s, leafy greens, and lean proteins can support mood regulation, while regular physical activity releases endorphins that naturally boost mental health.

4. Stay Socially Connected

Isolation can contribute to depression and anxiety. Engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones, and joining support groups can reinforce positive mental health habits and prevent relapse.

How Long Do TMS Results Last?

Research shows patients achieve 70% remission os symptoms with Classic (rTMS) and 90% with SNT. The benefits can last months to years, depending on lifestyle, stress levels, and mental health care.

If you experience a persistent emotional decline for five days where your feelings don’t align with your current environment, a booster session may help. This could occur at various points, such as six weeks, two months, or even a year after the initial treatment course.

By rewiring neural pathways, TMS helps break persistent negative thought patterns that fuel poor mental health. Long-term success depends on integrating healthy habits and follow-up care. Patients who prioritize themselves, positive coping mechanisms, and ongoing therapy tend to maintain results longer.

Can TMS Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Yes! At SCN, we offer advanced treatment options such as ketamine-assisted TMS, which has shown remarkable results in enhancing neuroplasticity and long-term mood stability. Many patients also continue using medication, therapy, or alternative treatments alongside TMS to support their mental health.

As you start feeling better, keep in mind that some medications which were once helpful might no longer be necessary and could even hinder your progress.

  • Assess: If, despite improvements in your life, you’re feeling emotionally numb, it might be time to reassess your medication plan.
  • Align: Ensure your personal treatment goals align with what your medication is designed to achieve.
  • Adapt: Allow yourself space to adapt and relearn how to fully experience your emotions—whether they are intense, joyful, or sad.

Always consult with your provider when making changes to your medication. If needed, you can reintroduce medications later. The goal is to find what works best for you at each stage of your recovery.

Our team will work with you to create a personalized aftercare plan based on your unique needs.

How to Prepare for Your First TMS Session

How to Prepare for Your First TMS Session

Understanding Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy

By Charles Miller, CRNA, CMO, Founder of Scenic City Neurotherapy

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment designed to help individuals struggling with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and OCD. Unlike traditional treatments such as medication or therapy alone, TMS stimulates specific brain areas responsible for mood regulation using targeted magnetic pulses. At Scenic City Neurotherapy (SCN), we use advanced neuronavigation technology and the SNT Protocol to provide an exact and practical TMS experience.

If you are considering TMS therapy for yourself or a loved one, you may have questions about the process, its effectiveness, and what to expect before treatment begins. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about pre-TMS treatment, preparing you for a successful therapy journey. Prefer a video format? Watch here: Key Steps for Navigating Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

How Does TMS Work?

TMS therapy involves sending painless magnetic pulses into targeted areas of the brain, specifically the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain plays a key role in mood regulation, and in individuals with depression, it often shows reduced activity. TMS works by stimulating neurons in this area, effectively rewiring neural pathways to restore balance and resolve symptoms.

At Scenic City Neurotherapy, we use advanced neuronavigation technology to ensure precision in targeting these key areas in the brain. This technology allows us to map each patient’s brain for an optimized treatment plan, setting us apart from other clinics.

Who Is a Candidate for TMS Therapy?

TMS is an FDA-approved treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), anxiety, and OCD. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who have not responded well to medications or traditional therapy. You might be a good candidate for TMS if you:

  • Have tried multiple medications with little to no improvement
  • Experience unwanted side effects from medications
  • Struggle with persistent depression or anxiety
  • Want a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option
  • Are not pregnant or do not have metal implants in the head (other than dental work)

A consultation with our SCN Care Team will help determine whether TMS is the right option for you. If needed, we can also discuss other potential options, like Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy ((MSKIT®).

What to Expect Before Your First TMS Session

If you and the SCN Care Team decide to proceed with TMS registration, here’s what to expect.

1. Comprehensive Initial Evaluation

Before treatment begins, you will undergo a detailed evaluation with our TMS Care Team. During this session, we will:

  • Review your medical history and previous treatments
  • Discuss your current symptoms and goals
  • Explain the treatment process and expectations

If you’re approved for TMS therapy after your evaluation, here’s what to expect before your first session.

2. Brain Mapping

Your first session is called the ‘mapping’. Mapping is a fancy term for ‘locating’ the area of the brain to be treated. For the treatment of depression, this area is called the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is just above the left eyebrow.

At SCN, we use advanced neuronavigation technology to ensure that the TMS pulses are precisely targeted. This personalized mapping process improves the effectiveness of treatment by ensuring that the magnetic stimulation reaches the correct areas of the brain.

During the mapping visit, we will determine your ‘motor threshold’ (the amount of energy required to invoke a stimulus). Once complete, you will receive your first treatment. Your treatments will be administered by a rTMS Therapy Certified Technician.

3. Preparing for the First Session

The day-of your first TMS session it’s best to:

  • Continue any prescribed medications unless advised otherwise
  • Dress comfortably.
  • The room can be cool. We provide blankets, or you can bring your own.
  • You can eat and drink before and after the session, but not during.
  • Use the bathroom before your treatment.
  • Music and phones aren’t allowed due to metal restrictions, but our friendly staff will be there to keep you entertained and supported.
  • You can drive yourself home after each session.

Your first session will last around 60 minutes, as we take time to ensure optimal placement and comfort.

For classic TMS (rTMS), future sessions typically last approximately 20 minutes and are scheduled one treatment per day, Monday-Friday, for 6 weeks with a 3-week wean, totaling 36 sessions.

If you choose to undergo the SNT protocol, the iTBS or theta burst treatments, will last approximately 3-minutes each, 10 sessions per day for five consecutive days, totaling 50 iTBS sessions.

Common Questions About TMS Therapy

1. Do I Have to Wear a Cap?

Our TMS protocols do not require anesthesia or a head cap, and they do not interfere with your medications.

2. How Soon Will I See the Results?

Every individual responds differently to TMS therapy. Some patients experience noticeable improvements in mood within 2-3 weeks, while others may take the full treatment cycle to experience significant relief.

3. Are There Any Side Effects?

TMS has minimal side effects compared to medications. The most common ones include mild headaches or scalp discomfort, which usually subside within a few sessions. There is a very small risk of seizure, but this is extremely rare, especially with our advanced targeting methods.

SCN also offers ketamine-assisted TMS for patients who may benefit from an additional boost in brain plasticity.

4. Can I Resume Normal Activities After TMS?

Yes! Since classic TMS does not require sedation or downtime, you can immediately return to your daily routine, work, and driving after each session.

While the SNT protocol does not require sedation, you will need to plan for a more intensive week with the following considerations:

  • Treatment Schedule: You’ll have a 50-minute gap between treatments each day.
  • Local Amenities: Feel free to visit nearby parks, restaurants, and stores within a ten-minute drive from our clinic. Our large parking lot is also ideal for walking.
  • Private Room: Each patient is provided with a private room equipped with two chairs. You’re welcome to bring a supportive friend or family member. The room is plain, so getting outside is recommended.
  • Food and Refreshments: You’ll have access to our kitchen, or you can have food delivered.
  • Work and Side Effects: It’s advisable not to work during this week as the treatment can be mentally taxing. Side effects may include fatigue and drowsiness by the end of the day.

For both protocols, if you choose to incorporate ketamine into your treatment plan, please arrange for a driver, as you won’t be able to drive yourself. For detailed guidance on this, be sure to watch our Key Steps for Navigating Minimally Stimulated Ketamine Infusion Therapy (MSKIT®) video.

The Future of Neurotherapy: Emerging Treatments

The Future of Neurotherapy:

Emerging Treatments

A Forward-Looking Perspective on Upcoming Advancements in Neurotherapeutic Treatments

Neurotherapy is at the forefront of medical innovation, offering groundbreaking solutions to enhance brain health and treat conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and neurodegenerative disorders. As researchers uncover new ways to optimize brain function, one of the most promising developments in this field is the emergence of neuroplastogens, a class of compounds that can drive lasting changes in brain plasticity.

Among the leading figures in this field is David E. Olson, whose pioneering research in 2018 demonstrated how psychoplastogens can promote neuroplasticity and restore neural networks affected by mental health conditions. As these innovations gain traction, Scenic City Neurotherapy remains committed to integrating the latest advancements to provide the most effective, science-backed neurotherapeutic solutions.

The Rise of Neuroplastogens: A Game Changer in Brain Health

Neuroplastogens are a novel class of therapeutics that enhance neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new connections. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to work and often yield limited efficacy, neuroplastogens show rapid and enduring effects by promoting structural and functional changes in the brain.

David E. Olson, a leading neurochemist and professor at the University of California, Davis, has been instrumental in uncovering the potential of these compounds. His research indicates that neuroplastogens can stimulate synaptogenesis (the formation of new synaptic connections) and increase the growth of dendritic spines, essential structures for communication between neurons. By doing so, they provide long-term relief from mood disorders, cognitive decline, and neurological injuries.

How Neuroplastogens Differ from Traditional Treatments

Traditional treatments such as SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) have long been the gold standard for treating mental illness. However, these treatments come with limitations, such as:

  • Delayed onset of action – SSRIs can take 4-6 weeks before noticeable effects occur.
  • Limited efficacy – Many patients experience only partial relief or become treatment-resistant.
  • Side effects – Long-term use can lead to side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and emotional blunting. With ECT, memory loss and cognitive deficits are not uncommon side effects, resulting from repeated synaptic injury due to frequent seizure stimulation.

Neuroplastogens, in contrast, work rapidly by inducing lasting neuroplastic changes within hours or days rather than weeks. Thus, they have the potential to provide immediate symptom relief while offering sustained benefits over time.

Promising Neuroplastogens on the Horizon

Several neuroplastogens are currently being researched and show remarkable potential in clinical applications:

  1. Psychedelic-Derived Compounds (Psilocybin, LSD, and DMT) – Studies suggest that these compounds are psychoplastogens which promote neuroplasticity and emotional resilience by interacting with serotonin receptors.
  2. Non-Hallucinogenic Neuroplastogens – David E. Olson’s research is paving the way for compounds derived from psychoplastogens that retain therapeutic actions without the hallucinatory effects.
  3. Ketamine and Its Derivatives – Already in use at clinics like Scenic City Neurotherapy, ketamine is one of the earliest psychoplastogens utilized in the treatment of depression and PTSD.
  4. Small-Molecule Neuroplastogens – Future treatments may include refined compounds that can be administered as daily medications without significant side effects.
